About
Antony Ballard is a noted celebrity chef turned contemporary artist. He has spent much of his career cooking for the famous people, including famed author Michael Crichton, legendary Rolling Stone guitarist Keith Richards, Jennifer Lawrence and comedic actor Chevy Chase.
Ballard contends that there is a spiritual side to his creativity – both in the kitchen and in his artwork. “Creating is what I do and how I do it, it flows through me” he says. “When I am creating a great meal or a painting, and make a mistake, it often takes on a life of its own, becoming something better.” He muses “The result is often delightful, but impossible to replicate.”
Born and raised in the UK, Ballard started his career as a chef out of necessity following the untimely passing of both his parents when he was still a teenager. He landed a job as a dishwasher in a 5-star hotel, where he was paid in basic food and shelter. Eventually his interest turned to cooking.
When the COVID pandemic shut down the world in 2020, Ballard decided to take his painting more seriously. His signature “Baby Hippo Collection” sprang forth. It is a series that celebrates innocence and joy, bursting with layer upon layer of vibrant colors wrapped in whimsy.
Ballard’s artistic range reflects his legendary culinary skills. Beyond the hippos, he creates landscapes, portraits of rock legends, commissioned pet portraits and even abstract paintings.
